The age of the house usually tells you the material, and the material tells you how much life the line has left:
Vitrified clay (Pre-1970s)
Durable material, but laid in short sections with mortar joints that settle and separate. The classic route for root intrusion in older neighborhoods.
Orangeburg (1945-1972)
Bituminized wood fiber — essentially tar paper rolled into pipe. Deforms into an oval and delaminates. If you have it, plan on replacement.
Cast iron (1900s-1980s)
Very strong when new, but corrodes and scales internally over decades. Often lasts 50–75 years before the bottom of the pipe rusts through.
ABS / PVC (1970s-Today)
Solid-wall plastic with glued joints. Reliable and the standard for new work. Failures are usually installation issues or crushing, not the material.
HDPE (1990s-Today)
Heat-fused polyethylene with no joints to separate. What pipe bursting pulls in, and the most durable option for a full replacement.
Cured-in-place liner (Modern Retrofit)
A resin-saturated liner cured inside the existing pipe, creating a seamless new pipe within the old one. No trench, and it seals out roots for good.

How do I know if it's the sewer line or just one drain?
The tell is how many fixtures are affected. One slow sink is a local clog. When toilets gurgle while the washer drains, or the lowest drain in the house backs up when you run water anywhere, the problem is the main line everything shares.
What is trenchless sewer repair?
Two methods. Pipe lining cures a resin-saturated sleeve inside your existing pipe, forming a seamless new pipe within the old one. Pipe bursting pulls a new HDPE line through while a bursting head fractures the old pipe outward. Both need an entry and exit pit rather than a trench along the whole run — but both require the existing line to be intact enough to follow.
Can every line be repaired trenchless?
No, and anyone who says otherwise hasn't looked. A fully collapsed section, a severe belly that needs re-grading, or a line that has to change route all require open excavation. The camera inspection tells us which category you're in before we quote.
How long does a sewer replacement take?
A spot repair is typically one day. Trenchless lining or bursting on a standard residential lateral is usually one to two days. A full open-trench replacement depends on length, depth, and what's on the surface — driveways and mature landscaping add time. We'll give you a realistic window up front.
Who owns the lateral — me or the city?
In most Hampton Roads jurisdictions the homeowner owns the lateral from the house to the city main, including the portion under the sidewalk or street. Does homeowner's insurance cover it?
