Backflow Preventers

Your water should only flow one way.

A backflow preventer is the one device standing between your drinking water and whatever's in the irrigation line, the boiler, or the street main. We install, test, certify, and repair them across Hampton Roads — and we file the paperwork with your water authority.

Backflow Preventers: What Every Property Owner Should Know

If your property has an irrigation system, a fire line, a boiler, or a commercial meter, Virginia requires an annual certified test. Here's the work we do every day — and the paperwork we handle so you don't have to.

How They Work

How Does Backflow Actually Happen?

Your water is supposed to move in one direction — from the main into your house. Backflow is when that reverses and contaminated water gets pulled or pushed back into the clean supply.

Back-siphonage happens when supply pressure drops — a water main break, a hydrant opened for a fire — and the vacuum pulls water backward through a hose sitting in a pool or a sprinkler head in a puddle.

Back-pressure is the opposite: a boiler, a pump, or a pressurized system pushes harder than the supply and forces its water into your line. A working preventer stops both.

Ask a Plumber

Got a notice from the city?

Ask a real plumber.

Send us the letter, the device model, or just the deadline on the postcard. A certified tester will tell you what's actually required and what it costs. No bots, no upsell.

Tell us what your notice says, or what device is on the property — RPZ, double check, PVB — and we'll take it from there.

The Signs

How To Tell Your Preventer Is Failing

A backflow device is mechanical — springs, checks, and rubber seats that wear out. Most failures are silent until the annual test, but some announce themselves.

Stop using the water and call us

  • Discolored, cloudy, or oily-looking water at the tap
  • A sulfur, chemical, or chlorine smell that wasn't there before
  • A visible cross-connection — a hose left in a pool, tub, or chemical tank
  • Continuous discharge from the relief valve on an RPZ
  • A notice from your water authority that service may be shut off
Backflow Testing & Installation

Worth a test, not an emergency

  • Water dripping steadily from the relief port
  • Corrosion, mineral crust, or green staining on the assembly body
  • A noticeable pressure drop downstream of the device
  • Test tags more than 12 months old, or missing entirely
  • A device left unwrapped through a freeze
  • Any assembly over 10 years old that's never been rebuilt

Missed your annual test deadline?

Water authorities across Hampton Roads can fine a property or shut off service for an uncertified device. If you're past due, we can usually get a certified tester out within a few business days and file the report for you the same week.

Commonly Asked Questions

Backflow questions, answered.

What is backflow, exactly?

Backflow is water moving the wrong direction — from your property back into the clean public supply. It happens two ways. Back-siphonage is when supply pressure drops (a main break, a hydrant opened for a fire) and the vacuum pulls water backward. Back-pressure is when a pump, boiler, or pressurized system pushes harder than the supply and forces its water in. A backflow preventer blocks both.

How often does my device need testing?

Once a year for nearly every testable assembly in Virginia, and the test has to be performed by a certified backflow tester. Your water authority tracks the due date and will notify you — though notices get lost, so it's worth putting it on your own calendar.

What happens if I don't get it tested?

Water authorities across Hampton Roads can issue fines and, for a device that's substantially overdue, terminate water service to the property until a passing test is on file. If you're past due, call us — we can usually get out within a few business days.

What's the difference between an RPZ, a double check, and a PVB?

They're rated for different hazard levels. A reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assembly is the highest protection and required for health-hazard connections like chemical injection or boilers with additives. A double check valve assembly covers lower-hazard connections. A pressure vacuum breaker (PVB) is common on residential irrigation and protects against back-siphonage only. We install and test all three.

Will a failed test mean a new device?

Usually not. Most failures come down to worn rubber seats, springs, or O-rings, and a manufacturer rebuild kit fixes them for far less than replacement. We carry common kits on the truck and retest immediately after the rebuild. Cracked bodies — often freeze damage — are the case where replacement is the honest answer.

Do you file the paperwork with the city?

Yes. We submit the certified test report to your water authority as part of the job and send you a copy for your records. You don't need to chase anything.
