Plumbers in Chesapeake, VA
When you need plumbers in Chesapeake, VA, you want someone who already knows what they are walking into. A 1960s ranch in South Norfolk has a different set of problems than a 1990s build in Greenbrier, and a plumber who has not worked both will spend your money figuring that out.

Atomic Plumbing has worked across Chesapeake since 1968. We are a family-owned company based just over the line in Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake has been part of our service area for decades. Our technicians are journeymen with at least four years in the trade, and between them they bring more than 240 years of combined experience to the plumbing services we provide here.

Where we work
Chesapeake Neighborhoods We Serve
Chesapeake covers more than 340 square miles, which is a lot of ground and a lot of different housing. We work throughout the city, including Great Bridge, Greenbrier, Deep Creek, Western Branch, South Norfolk, Hickory, Butts Station, Grassfield, and Pleasant Grove, along with the more rural areas toward the south of the city.
Running a fleet of service trucks across South Hampton Roads is the practical reason we can get to most of Chesapeake without a long wait, whether you are off Battlefield Boulevard or out past Centerville Turnpike.
Local knowledge
Plumbing Problems Common in Chesapeake Homes
Three things come up again and again here, and all three trace back to when and where the house was built.
Aging supply lines in the older neighborhoods
South Norfolk and parts of Great Bridge have a lot of mid-century housing, and homes from that era were frequently plumbed with galvanized steel. Galvanized corrodes from the inside, which narrows the pipe and shows up as falling water pressure long before anything actually leaks. If your pressure has been dropping gradually for years, that is usually why. Our guide on whether you need to replace old pipes covers how to tell.
Polybutylene in the 1980s and 1990s builds
Chesapeake grew quickly through those decades, and polybutylene supply line was widely used in residential construction nationwide during that window. It fails without much warning, and it is worth knowing whether your home has it before it tells you itself. Polybutylene is grey, flexible, and usually marked PB2110. Check where the line enters at the water heater or under sinks.
A high water table and what it does to sewer lines
Much of Chesapeake sits on low, flat ground that holds water, which matters more for plumbing than people expect. Saturated soil draws tree roots toward sewer lines, and roots are the single most common cause of main line blockages we see in this city. Heavy rain from a nor’easter or a tropical system can push a line that was already partly blocked into a full backup.
If you are getting slow drains in more than one fixture at once, that points at the main line rather than any single drain. A camera inspection tells you whether it is roots, grease, a belly in the line, or a collapse, which determines whether this is a cleaning or a repair.
City requirement
Annual Backflow Testing in Chesapeake
If your Chesapeake property has an in-ground irrigation system, the city requires a backflow preventer and an annual test report filed with the Cross Connection Inspector. Commercial properties have a second layer, since the primary containment assembly is reviewed separately and its reports go to Public Utilities. Virginia also requires the person performing the test to hold a state license, which is why a landscaper who handled it years ago may no longer be able to. We cover the requirements in detail on our backflow preventer page.
Through the year
Seasonal Plumbing in Chesapeake
Our winters are mild on average, and that is exactly what causes trouble. Temperatures here hover around the freezing line rather than sitting below it, so pipes go through repeated freeze and thaw cycles instead of one steady cold stretch. That cycling is harder on a fitting than a sustained deep freeze, and it is why Chesapeake sees burst pipes in a climate most people would not think of as cold.
The pipes most at risk are the ones in unheated garages, crawl spaces, and exterior walls, along with outdoor spigots and above-ground irrigation assemblies. Disconnecting garden hoses before the first hard freeze and insulating exposed runs costs very little and prevents most of it.
Spring brings the opposite problem. Irrigation systems come back online, backflow test due dates cluster, and the first heavy rains find any weakness already present in a sewer line. Summer humidity accelerates corrosion on anything brass or galvanized. Scheduling routine drain maintenance in the fall, before the holidays put extra load on your kitchen plumbing, heads off a surprising share of what we get called out for in December.

A few things are standard on every Chesapeake call:
- You get a photo of your technician before they arrive, so you know who is at the door
- Sanitary booties and drop cloths go down every time, in every house
- You get the price before the work starts, not after
- Free estimates on larger jobs like repiping, sewer line work, and water heater replacement
- A 100% satisfaction guarantee, meaning we redo the work or refund it
- Military and senior discounts, which matter in a city with this many service families, and financing for work that lands outside the budget

Commonly Asked Questions
Questions Chesapeake Homeowners Ask Us
Do you actually serve all of Chesapeake?
Yes, from South Norfolk down through Great Bridge and Hickory and west into Western Branch and Deep Creek. We also serve Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk.
My water pressure has been dropping for years. Is that fixable?
Usually, and the fix depends on the cause. It can be a failing pressure regulator, a partially closed valve, or corroded galvanized supply lines. The first two are straightforward repairs. The third is a repiping conversation. We will tell you which one you have before quoting anything.
How do I know if my sewer problem is roots?
Recurring backups that clear and come back on a predictable cycle are the classic sign, especially in a yard with mature trees. A camera inspection confirms it, and the choice afterward is between cutting the roots back periodically or repairing the section they are entering through.
Do I need a permit for plumbing work in Chesapeake?
For most repairs, no. Water heater replacement, repiping, sewer line work, gas line work, and irrigation backflow installation generally do require one. We pull the permits for the work we do, so that is not something you need to chase.
Can you handle commercial plumbing?
Yes. We work with restaurants, offices, medical and dental practices, and multi-family and HOA properties throughout Chesapeake, including backflow compliance and scheduled drain maintenance.
